Currently, where we stand, we find our Indian Cinema full of emotions, actions, Drama and lots of innovations.

But, this wasn’t the scenario all the time! There was once a time, when the Indian Cinema never existed!

Currently we are standing firm footed in 2019, but many of you must be surprised that the Indian Cinema never existed until 1913, those who must be knowing about the History of Indian Cinema.

Who was the Father of Indian Cinema?

Way back in 1897, Save Dada initiated the process of Indian Cinema, when he made two short films.

Harishchandra Sakharam Bhatavdekar who was popularly known as Save Dada, was a still photographer and since he was highly influenced by the Lumiere Brothers’ production that he decided to get the camera from England and recorded a wrestling match at the Hanging Gardens in Mumbai, known as ‘The Wrestlers’. This first recording was credited as the first motion picture in the Indian Film Industry.

However, the real credit goes to the Dada Saheb Phalke and Ardeshir Irani, who made the first feature length silent film in 1913 and first talking film in 1931 respectively.  

What were the names of the first Cinema ever to be made in India?

Raja Harishchandra was the first cinema ever to be made, which was the art work of Dada Saheb Phalke and was produced in 1913. The Raja Harishchandra is credited as the first silent feature film made in India. The first talking film was the Alam Ara, which was produced by Ardeshir Irani and was screened in Bombay in 1931 and is regarded as the first sound film in India.

Ever since, the launch of the Raja Harishchandra, the Indian Cinema saw lots of innovations and developments, and went on to see such a stage where the current Indian cinema is standing.

Masala Movies – The advent of new trend in Indian Cinema

While, you may witness the common topics of Indian Cinemas when you look at the History of Indian Cinema, which were being made during those early phases, the Masala movies weren’t even in the scene. However, the Masala movies entered into the fray and the credit goes to the most prominent and successful director, Manmohan Desai. Mr. Manmohan Desai was regarded as the father of Masala movies.

As per the words of Manmohan Desai, he wanted people to forget about their misery and wanted to take them into the fantasy world, where the poverty, miseries weren’t a part of people’s life. He wanted people to come out of the depressing life, and at least dream of fantasizing about the fantasy world. He wanted people to enter into the world, where there is no poverty and where’s there is no signs of beggars, and where fate is kind and god is busy looking after HIS children.

Take a look at History of Indian Cinema, With this motive he started producing Masala movies. The actors like Rajesh Khanna, Dharmendra, Hema Malini and many others were some of the most noticeable faces of Masala movies of that time (the times of 1970s!).

Now, the Indian Cinema has become part and parcel of our daily life and we can’t imagine life without Cinema!
