Indian Cinema Timeline and Milestones

The Indian Cinema has walked down a very long path. The path which in a way started in 1899 and walked all along the 120 years of long path and currently stands at 2019.

Today, every Friday, we see some big releases at Big Screens and walk down to the theatres to watch our favorite Heroes and Heroines. But, how many of them are well avid by the history of Indian Cinema?

While, we are watching our heroes fighting off to the struggles of life and most of the times, defeating the hardships and villains and emerge as the winners, and we happily come out of the theatres with the mood to go home. But how many of you have ever think, what stages of development has been in the Indian Cinema to reach to such a level, where our actors are performing.

Let’s guide you to the history of Indian Cinema, timeline and milestone events.


The first ever film recoded in India! Save Dada recorded the first motion picture in Indian Film Industry, which was a wrestling match. The recording was done at Hanging Gardens in Mumbai and is popularly, known as ‘The Wrestlers’.


Dada Saheb Phalke was the first person to ever produce a feature film in Indian Cinema. The film ever made was ‘Raja Harishchandra’ and was the first silent feature film made in India.


The era of the Talkie movies begun in India in the year 1931, when Ardeshir Irani made the first ever talking film ‘Alam Ara’.


The first ever talkie film in Bengali, ‘Jamai Shashthi’, was produced by Madan Theatres Ltd


The first ever Tamil movies ‘Kalidass’  was directed by H.M. Reddy.

As per the data, 328 films were made in year 1931, in comparison to 108 in year 1927

1931 to 1945

the Indian Cinema saw a rapid progress. However, the Indian Cinema suffered during the World War 2.

1940s to 1960s

The timeline from 1940s to 1960s is regarded as the golden period of Indian Cinema, where the Indian Cinema saw a revolution with the launch of several parallel films. With the movies like Do Bigha Zameen (1953), saw several really aspiring Indian Bengali Movie Producers entering into the fray from late 1940s and dominating the Indian Cinema and in a way taking Indian Cinema to the next level.

1940s to 1960s

Several Memorable actors like the legendary Guru Dutt, Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand and actress like the most beautiful Meena Kumari, Madhubala, Nargis, Nutan, Waheeda Rehman and many others entered into the Indian Cinema.


Neecha Nagar won Palme d’Or at Cannes!


Aparajito won Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival!


The Epic Indian Cinema ‘Mother India’ was produced!
